The problem
Addressing violence, especially toward women in Peru, is critical for both immediate individual welfare and long-term societal health. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, 2024) reports that one in three women aged 15 to 49 have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence in their lives, highlighting a significant public health issue that impedes economic stability and community development. The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI, 2020) underscores the deep societal impacts of such violence, which often remains hidden within families but causes lasting damage.
The National Aurora Program by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations recorded over 320,000 cases of violence against women and family members in 2023 alone, illustrating the prevalence of this issue in Peru. Official data indicate that up to 70% of adult women have faced psychological, physical, and/or sexual violence at some point. The urgent need for action is evident; addressing this violence transcends legal justice and touches upon the core of societal well-being
Description of the solution:
A mobile application designed to combat violence against women in Peru, providing quick access to emergency resources, rights education, and a support community.
The app will provide the next key features:
Emergency Button: The application would provide an easily accessible emergency button that women can press in case of danger or emergency. When the button is pressed, an alert would be triggered, notifying local emergency services and emergency contacts designated by the user.
Emergency Resources: In addition to the emergency button, the application would provide a list of emergency resources, such as police phone numbers, medical services, women’s help centers for victims of violence, emergency shelters, and 24-hour helplines.
Legal Guides: The application would include legal guides that inform women about their rights and legal options in cases of violence or abuse. This could include information on how to file complaints, obtain restraining orders, access free legal services, and seek legal protection.
Educational Workshops: The application would offer virtual educational workshops on topics related to gender-based violence, women’s rights, violence prevention, and self-care. These workshops could include interactive modules, educational videos, quizzes, and additional resources to encourage continuous learning.
Support Community: The application would host a secure online community where women can connect with each other, share experiences, receive emotional support, and receive advice from peers and experts. The community could also serve as a platform for sharing resources, safety tips, and empowerment strategies.
How Protegida contributes to the ONU (sustainable goal)?
SDG 5 : Gender Equality
Our app directly addresses the issue by providing quick access to emergency resources, legal guides, and educational workshops for women who are experimenting violence.Â
The platform aims to empower Peruvian women by providing them with information about their rights and access to a supportive community. This focus on empowerment aligns with SDG 5’s objective of ensuring full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making.
By leveraging technology to provide tools for violence prevention and ongoing support, the mobile application contributes to creating safer environments for women in Peru. This is in line with SDG 5’s goal of ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, including access to information and education.
