Proposal

The problem to be addressed is the difficulty that people with hearing disabilities have when communicating with other individuals, and the lack of sign language translators, which according to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI, 2021), in Mexico in 2020 there were 2.3 million people with hearing disabilities, as well as that according to the legislature of Michoacán (2024), in Mexico there are only 40 certified interpreters in Mexican Sign Language.

Handslate seeks to support public and private establishments that wish to include the hearing impaired population within their portfolio of users or customers, providing small, medium and large organizations with an application that facilitates communication to the hearing impaired in public-commercial establishments, which based on the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units (DENUE, 2022), indicates that in Mexico there are 674,826 economic units dedicated to the preparation services, temporary accommodation 701,629 economic units and 148,351 institutions dedicated to educational services.

Handslate’s application provides text-to-sign language interpretation services through personal devices such as cell phones, tablets and computers. This service uses artificial intelligence based on convolutional neural networks, which analyzes and interprets visual patterns captured through the device’s camera. In this way, it generates accurate responses in the form of sign translations, offering an innovative and accessible solution for inclusive communication.

Initially, the application will be configured in Mexican Sign Language and will be available on platforms such as the App Store, Play Store, App Gallery and the Website.

Handslate makes decisions based on social responsibility, human quality, innovation, trust and empathy, so it is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 9 Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure and 10 Reducing inequalities; Handslate is primarily committed to the latter SDG, which aims to provide a safe space where people with hearing disabilities can develop in an environment where they feel included and comfortable performing actions of their daily lives by reducing communication barriers combined with technology and use of artificial intelligence.
