Social Challenge

“Most people with disabilities (PWDs) in Vietnam are unemployed or working with low pay rate.”

1. Why do PWDs have low paid jobs?

Because majority of them are assigned to manual labor: massage therapy, basic computing, handicrafts, and sewing are the primary occupations for PWDs (Tran et. al., 2017).

2. Why do PWDs only do manual labor?

Because of discrimination in mainstream occupations: 53% of PWDs interviewed for a position are rejected, underpaid or unpaid, or are not promoted because of their disabilities (Tran et. al., 2017; UNDP 2023).

3. Why are PWDs discriminated against in most professions?

Because employers and society believe that PWDs can only do certain kinds of jobs: Study reveals  PWDs’ options are frequently restricted to a set of predefined occupations no matter if they have suitable vocational training (Tran et. al., 2017).

4. Why don’t PWDs have access to diverse employment opportunities?

Because they have low level of education: Only 19.5% of PWDs have completed secondary school or higher; 93.4% of PWDs aged 16 and older have no professional qualifications; and 6.5% have a bachelor’s degree (MOLISA, 2023). According to Tran et. al. (2017), up to 66% of PWDs do not take the entrance exam when applying for a job.

The proportion of laborers aged 15 and over working in the economy is 31.74%, with only 39.04% and 37.14%, respectively, holding vocational secondary and College+ degrees (GSO, 2018, page 91).

5. Why is the education level of PWDs so low?

Because they don’t have access to quality education and training: PWDs have limited access to information and face financial difficulties. They usually go with limited training courses available in disability focused centres without proper career guidance. 

Due to a dearth of investment and emphasis on disability training, only three out of one hundred schools are designed for PWDs; eight have accessible walkways; and ten have accessible sanitation facilities (GSO & UNICEF, 2018).

Most PWDs reside in impoverished or near-poor areas. 87.27% of PWDs reside in rural areas, and the proportion of PWDs living in poverty or near poverty in rural areas is frequently three times the national average (MOLISA, 2023).

Social Solution

TEA offers a model of technology enabled connections between PWDs and a group of service providers and employers. PWDs can access affordable career coaching, training courses, and job placement anytime, anywhere through TEA website and app. This model overcomes geographical barriers, eliminates inconveniences and limitations of travel and physical infrastructure. On the other hand, TEA enables businesses to tap into an under-utilized and well trained workforce, which will enhance their profitable operation while fulfilling their CSR. 

TEA empowers PWDs to maximize their earning potential through career coaching, optimal training path, and suitable job placement. 

Career coaching: Lack of career counselling leads to low competitiveness among PWDs in the labor market, necessitating career reorientation. Utilizing AI, TEA offers guidance in setting up career goals tailored to each PWD’s strengths and weakness, and build a training path to achieve them. Necessary soft skills training are also provided to enhance job seekers’ positions during recruitment. This process boosts candidates’ confidence and eliminates self-doubt. (SDG 8.5.2, and SDG 10.2.1)

Training courses: Leveraging technology, TEA offers affordable short-term courses teaching skills that are in high demand in the current labor market. With TEA’s convenient platform, PWDs can access quality training anytime, anywhere.  TEA connects with major educational organizations (FPT, Coursera, Unica, etc.) through API integration to have quality courses and reputable skill certifications. (SDG 4.5)

Job placement: TEA evaluates user data, including capabilities, skills, and career preferences, to connect them with suitable job opportunities which are diverse in industries and formats (offline, online, hybrid, freelance, etc.). Convenient job application caters to candidates with different needs, especially those with limited mobility, while facilitating direct connectivity throughout the recruitment process. (SDG 8.5.2, SDG 10.2.1, and SDG 17.14)
