Social challenges:

Huge amounts of untreated agricultural waste (bagasse, straw) and industrial waste (gypsum waste from fertilizer production) have been a worrying problem, exerting negative impacts on the living environment and human health. 

According to a report by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, it is estimated that in 2022 Vietnam had about 62.5 million tons of untreated agricultural waste. In particular, there are 47,623 million tons of straw and 3,9 million tons of bassage per year and most of them is discharged directly as trash and incinerated on the spot. This combustion of straw and bagasse releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2)and carbon monoxide (CO) into the atmosphere, contributing to environmental pollution and global warming. Long exposure to toxic fumes emitted also seriously deteriorates farmers’ health , leading to lung diseases.  Additionally, industrial waste including over 150 million tons of gypsum each year are discharged and buried underground, which heavily contaminates the surrounding soil.

Our multi-purpose fireproof PU foam product is the solution to the aforementioned problems

Solution idea:

From two aforementioned environmental problems, we came up with the idea of creating  multi-purpose PU foam products to exploit 70% untreated agricultural industrial waste. Therefore, our product can contribute to reducing the amount of waste discharged, thereby minimizing environmental pollution. We also create many job opportunities for the community, including collecting, processing and producing construction materials, enhancing economic development in the region. Additionally, using waste to produce building materials can reduce production costs to create high quality products with superior mechanical properties at affordable prices

 

  • Product process

Gypfoam is a sustainable building material, using 70% agricultural waste (bagasse and straw) and industrial waste (gypsum). By-products from the processing of bagasse and straw can be used as fertilizer for plants. During the group’s process of treating agricultural waste using biotechnology. Profits from fertilizer sales will be offset against fiber processing costs, thus reducing the cost of the product.

The products have superior physical and mechanical properties such as heat insulation, sound insulation, fire resistance,… than other products of the same category on the market. The physical and mechanical properties have been tested and certified by the Institute of Tropical Technology – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
