NANONEEM project description

Social challenge:

Toxic pesticide overuse is an emergent issue with negative impacts on the environment, human and economy of Vietnam. Furthermore, neem forest in the Central region is disappearing fast due to farming purposes of the locals, damaging the ecosystem and putting the region at risk of more severe natural disasters.

Pesticide from neem is the solution to both issues above. A green-but-still-effective pesticide is the key to sustainable development of Vietnam, where 43% of population engaged in agriculture. Local people can sustainably exploit neem forest by collecting neem seeds and leaves, bringing income while protecting the forest.

Solution idea:

We convert neem oil to highly-active-and-green pesticides by using advanced nanotechnology. This new generation of pesticide has short waiting time before harvesting with minimized impacts on human and environment. This will encourage locals to maintain and expand the neem forest, especially minority living in area of harsh natural conditions.

NanoNeem offers transformation toward greenpro-health and environmentally benign pest control practice at affordable price. By combining the naturally available defense mechanism against pests in neem and other herbal plants with state-of-the-art nanotechnology, NanoNeem has excellent penetration properties, thus significantly enhancing the efficiency of natural ingredients.

NanoNeem is easy to use with a short waiting time and minimized environmental footprints, thus benefiting the farmers and community who are consuming the final agricultural products. It also helps solve the emergent issue of chemical pesticide overuse, protecting neem forests while improving income for local people by sustainably harvesting neem seeds and leaves.

Contribution to UN goals:

Goal #1: NANONEEM brings income for local residents of neem forest. Neem tree can survive well in dry, harsh and infertile soil, thus it is also suitable for minorities living in remote area with tough natural conditions.

Goal #3: NANONEEM helps to solve the problem of toxic pesticides overuse and plays a key role in producing healthy and safe food for the society while protecting the well-being of farmers.

Goal #5: Collecting neem seeds and leaves is suitable for both women and men. Therefore the success of NANONEEM will create more jobs and choices for women, supporting gender equality especially in minority groups.

Goal #8: The pesticide market in Vietnam is 1 billion USD each year and 90% are imported. Replacing harmful chemical pesticides with green ones made from local natural resources will have positive impacts to the GDP and promote economic growth.

Goal 11#: Residents in Central Vietnam can sustainably exploit neem forest for economic benefits while protecting the forest. Neem forest further supports the livelihoods of the community by stabilizing the ecosystem and reduce vulnerability to natural disasters.

Goal #12: NANONEEM is a green pesticide, effective but safe for human and friendly to the environment. NANONEEM helps pushing toward sustainable and responsible agricultural production.

Goal #13: Maintaining and expanding neem forest will help regulate the ecosystem, reduce greenhouse gas emission and is thus a strong force to fight against climate change.

Goal #15: Neem forest helps combat desertification, minimize soil erosion, reduce air pollution, restore underground water resources and enhance biodiversity of the region.
